Empowering Change Through Savings
and Investment
Ejigayew Demisse, a mother of one from Mizan-
Aman, has transformed her life through financial
empowerment. As a dedicated member of the Siket
Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) since
2016, she has diligently saved and accessed loans to
improve her financial well-being. By investing in
poultry farming, she has grown her small savings into
a profitable business, ensuring a stable income for her
family and inspiring other women in her community.
Issue
Like many women in her community, Ejigayew faced financial
hardships with limited access to credit and income-generating
opportunities. The lack of financial literacy and capital made it
difficult for her to start or expand a business. Despite her willingness
to work
“I never imagined that saving small amounts could
lead to such a big change in my life. With the support
of my VSLA group, I turned my savings into a real
business. Now, I can confidently support my family
and plan for a better future.” – Ejigayew Demisse
Intervention
Joining the Siket VSLA group was a turning point for Ejigayew. She
started saving a small amount weekly, eventually accumulating
enough to access a loan. Through the group’s support, she received a
loan, which she combined with her savings to purchase 20 chickens.
This small step marked the beginning of her journey toward financial
independence.
Her struggle was not easy. Managing poultry farming required effort,
patience, and resilience. However, with determination, she nurtured
her chickens, gradually increasing their value and turning her initial
investment into a thriving business.
Impact
Today, Ejigayew’s poultry farm is valued significantly higher than
her initial investment. She has not only secured a stable income for
her family but has also gained recognition within her community as a
role model for financial empowerment. Her success demonstrates the
power of savings and community support in creating lasting
economic change. Inspired by her journey, other women in her VSLA
group are now motivated to follow in her footsteps, making financial
independence a reality for many.
Ejigayew plans to expand her business further, ensuring a sustainable
future for her child while continuing to uplift others in her
community.
