“Now, I shine brightly with my children’s, having faced and overcome my problems”.

Meskerm’s  Asefa Initially enrolled in Butajira SNU Community Health and Counseling Team (CHCT) program after testing positive for HIV, Meskerm faced significant hurdles in accepting her diagnosis. Struggling with fear of stigma and the weight of her low economic status, she found herself in a difficult situation. As a daily laborer, Meskerm was unable to provide proper care for her children, even having to entrust her first child to her sister for support. added another layer of stress as she faced the challenge of raising children on her own .Meskerm was refuse for one year to start her treatment. She grappled with deep emotional turmoil, uncertain about how to move forward with her life.

However, things began to change when Meskerm joined our CHCT program. Through a combination of health care support, psychological counseling, and education, gradually found the strength to accept her HIV status. Our team worked closely with her. Meskerm began taking her medication regularly, marking a critical turning point in her life. support didn’t stop with medical support by integrated  with  (OVC) program, which offered Asset transfer. In 2022, by join Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) group, Meskerm started a small business selling “Shetty” (dress cloth) in the local market. This venture not only provided her with an income but also gave her a sense of purpose and independence. As her business grew, Meskerm expanded her operations by opening her own shop, improving her family’s financial situation and creating a job opportunity for another one person in her community.

What is most inspiring about Meskerm’s journey is her transformation into a source of hope and support for others. With her newfound confidence and strength, she became an active volunteer and Community Resource Person (CRP). In this role, Meskerm supports others living with HIV, offering counseling, guidance, and practical assistance. By openly disclosing her own HIV status, Meskerm has become a powerful advocate, showing others that it is possible to overcome challenges and thrive despite the obstacles.
