Almaz’s story

Almaz W/Mariam’s story showcases her remarkable transformation from poverty to independence, achieved through the support of USAID’s PEPFAR initiative. Leveraging a small grant of chickens, she started a thriving fruit and vegetable business while sustaining additional income through egg production. Her success is not just financial; it symbolizes resilience, entrepreneurial spirit, and hope. Today, she is building a secure future for her children, illustrating the profound impact of community-based support programs in fostering lasting change.

Issue

In Bonga Town, Almaz W/Mariam, a widowed HIV positive mother of two, faced extreme hardship. Struggling to provide basic needs for her children, she was caught in a cycle of poverty that left little room for hope or opportunity. Her circumstances were a testament to the challenges faced by many vulnerable women in her community.

Intervention

Almaz’s life took a transformative turn in 2024 when she received support through USAID’s Family Focus HIV prevention and care activity, implemented locally by Progynist. The program provided her with chickens, an asset that became a stepping stone to resilience and independence.

Rather than relying solely on the chickens, Almaz saw an opportunity to create lasting change. She sold most of them to launch a small fruit and vegetable business, retaining a few to generate additional income through egg production. Her decision to reinvest in her future exemplifies her entrepreneurial spirit and determination.

Impact

The change in Almaz’s life has been profound. Through her business, she has cultivated stability and independence, transforming her family’s outlook and her children’s attending education. She has joined a Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA), where she actively saves, gaining not only financial security but also confidence in managing her resources.

Though she humbly refers to herself as a “struggler,” her journey is a powerful story of resilience and transformation. “The journey is challenging, but now I can provide for my children and dream of a better future,” she reflects.

Future Plans

Almaz plans to expand her business and continue participating in her VSLA group. Her dream is to provide her children with quality education and ensure they have opportunities she never had. Her story illustrates how targeted community-based support can empower individuals, fostering not only immediate relief but also long-term resilience.
